This is a wonderfully quirky telling of an important and usually overlooked slice of gay American history. In the 1970s, gay culture in the South was so different from in the North that to move between the two was utterly disorienting. Padgett's book gives readers a look at Southern gay culture through the eyes of those who best knew the sharp edge of gender-related oppression--professional drag show stars and early gay activists. To read the stories of these shamans, entwined with the handful of gay events that the press covered, is to discover the sensitive strip where personal and political meet. For me, diving into the book was like traveling back to my 18th year and seeing it all again, but this time with a friend along to explain the mystifying things I experienced.
